Chennai Super Kings have been dealt a significant setback with Ayush Mhatre being ruled out of the rest of IPL 2026 after sustaining a left hamstring injury.

The 18-year-old picked up the injury while batting during Chennai’s recent clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 18 in Hyderabad. Medical assessments have since confirmed that the problem will require an extended spell on the sidelines, with recovery expected to take between 6–12 weeks.

How CSK’s Ayush Mhatre Injury Unfolded In Hyderabad Clash

The incident unfolded in Chennai’s latest outing when Mhatre arrived at No. 3 and instantly found his rhythm. He surged to 30 off just 12 balls, dictating terms with aggressive strokeplay.

The promising innings ended abruptly as he attempted a quick double with captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, pulling up sharply and clutching his hamstring. The physio rushed onto the field and halted play, underlining the seriousness of the issue.

CSK’s Ayush Mhatre Was In Red Hot Form Before Injury Setback

Mhatre’s absence compounds an already growing injury list for Chennai this season. With veteran MS Dhoni still sidelined and pacer Khaleel Ahmed ruled out of the tournament, the squad is beginning to feel the strain as the campaign intensifies.

In just five matches, CSK’s Ayush Mhatre has scored 201 runs at a strike rate exceeding 175, including two half-centuries, marking him as one of the standout young performers of the tournament.

Selection Headache For CSK As Replacements Come Into Focus

Team management now faces a decision on whether to draft in a replacement or reshuffle from within, with Urvil Patel emerging as a strong candidate to slot in at No. 3.

Known for his explosive hitting, Urvil has yet to feature this season but will likely step into the playing XI for Chennai’s upcoming fixture against Mumbai Indians on April 23.

Meanwhile, there is a timely boost on the bowling front as Australian quick Spencer Johnson, who had been recovering from injury, has rejoined the squad in Mumbai and could be in contention for selection.

While the setbacks have tested squad depth, Chennai will hope their young opener’s recovery progresses smoothly, with expectations that he will return stronger after completing his rehabilitation.
