  • Shreyas Iyer labels 15-year-old as “spectacular talent” and one for the future
  • Rising star could become youngest-ever India international on Ireland tour in June

Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer has heaped praise on teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, describing the 15-year-old as a “spectacular talent” following his explosive start to IPL 2026.

The Rajasthan Royals opener has captured attention across the league, combining fearless stroke-play with composure that belies his age. Iyer’s comments came after Punjab Kings’ convincing 54-run win over Lucknow Super Giants, yet much of the conversation centred on the young batter’s rapid rise.

Sooryavanshi has amassed 246 runs in six matches at a stunning strike rate of 236.53, underlining his impact at the top of the order and his ability to seize momentum early in an innings.

“Spectacular talent” – Shreyas Iyer Breaks Down What Makes Him Special

Iyer, speaking to reporters after the match, highlighted the technical qualities that set the youngster apart, pointing to his natural rhythm and fluency at the crease, stating:

“He is a spectacular talent, and all the adjectives would be pretty much less for him. The way he has that bat flow, the rhythm and momentum he creates before the delivery, I think he is one for the future.”

Teenage Sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Impresses with Rare Composure

What has stood out is not just the volume of runs but the authority with which they have been scored. The teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has shown an advanced understanding of tempo, blending aggression with control against both pace and spin.

There is already growing chatter that he could soon find himself on the international radar. If included in India’s squad for the Ireland tour in June, Sooryavanshi would become the youngest-ever Indian international, a remarkable milestone for a player still in the early stages of his career.

Punjab Kings Culture Built on Freedom and Belief

While reflecting on opposition talent, Iyer also offered insight into the culture within the Punjab Kings dressing room, emphasising the importance of backing young players to play without fear.

Speaking to reporters, he said:

“We have a team room, which is probably there for every team. We try to spend a lot of time together in that team room before and after games, and whenever we have off days.

We come together and build that bond. Whenever I speak to them, my only message is, just be yourself. Don’t try to emulate, mimic, or be someone else.”

Teenage Sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and the Next Generation Mindset

Iyer’s approach has already paid dividends for players such as Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya, who have flourished with the freedom to express themselves.

He reinforced that belief remains central to performance at this level, commenting:

“When you are playing at this level, and you are fearless and flamboyant in your own way, you don’t have to resemble or copy anyone.

When you tell these guys that they are match-winners, both Prabhsimran and Priyansh Arya, it instils confidence in them. They can just go out there and play freely. They have been delivering for us, and hopefully, they continue to do so.”

As IPL 2026 progresses, Sooryavanshi’s rise continues to gather pace. With performances that blend excitement and maturity, the “spectacular talent” tag is quickly becoming a defining label rather than early hype.
