The Pakistan Cricket Board has imposed a one-season Pakistan Super League Ban on Sri Lanka all-rounder Dasun Shanaka, ruling him out of the 2027 edition after determining he breached his contractual obligations with Lahore Qalandars.
In an official statement, the PCB said the decision followed a thorough review of the circumstances surrounding Shanaka’s withdrawal.
The board concluded that the player had unilaterally pulled out of his agreement, a move that violated both the Player Registration terms and the Tripartite Agreement that governs league participation.
Why The Pakistan Super League Ban Was Enforced
The sanction adds to a growing list of firm actions by the PCB in recent months as it seeks to reinforce the integrity of its flagship tournament.
It comes shortly after Zimbabwe fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani was handed a two-season ban for stepping away from Islamabad United to join Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League.
That penalty remains the most severe issued so far, though it has drawn criticism, with Muzarabani’s agent describing it as “incredibly excessive” in comments made to media outlets.
Reduced Punishment After Apology From Shanaka
However, the PCB treated Shanaka’s case with a degree of leniency. Sources indicate the board reduced his ban after he issued a formal apology, acknowledged his misstep and expressed regret for the fallout.
In a statement released via the PCB, Shanaka said:
“I deeply regret my decision to withdraw from the PSL and offer my sincere apologies to the people of Pakistan, the fans of PSL, and the wider cricket community.
The PSL is a prestigious tournament, and I fully understand the disappointment caused by my actions. To the loyal fans of Lahore Qalandars, I am truly sorry for letting you down.”
He added:
“I must clarify that at the time I withdrew from the PSL I had no intention of joining any other tournament. I have the greatest respect for Pakistani fans and have always enjoyed my time in Pakistan. I hope to return to the PSL in the future with renewed dedication and the trust of the fans.”

Lahore Qalandars had signed Shanaka for approximately $27,000 at the player auction, but he opted out before the season began. He later joined Rajasthan Royals in the IPL as an injury replacement for Sam Curran on a deal worth around $214,000. The move marked his return to the IPL after a three-year absence, though he is yet to feature in a match.
Growing List Of PSL Bans Raises Questions
With this ruling, Shanaka becomes the third player to receive a ban for withdrawing in favour of IPL opportunities. He joins Blessing Muzarabani and South Africa all-rounder Corbin Bosch on that list.
The PCB’s stance signals a clear intent to protect the league’s commitments, while still leaving room for reconciliation when players acknowledge their mistakes.
