  • Sciver-Brunt’s withdrawal a precaution
  • One month to go until the T20 World Cup
  • Will miss series against New Zealand

England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt has been ruled out of their one-day international series against New Zealand with a calf injury, with just one month to go until the T20 World Cup.

‘Precautionary Measure’

Sciver-Brunt’s injury was sustained whilst playing for the Blaze in their midweek Metro Bank Cup match, a victory over Warwickshire. In the match, Sciver-Brunt scored 47 off 32 balls, as well as taking 2-45.

She experienced some discomfort after the game, and scans at the weekend revealed a minor calf tear. The ECB described the move as a ‘precautionary measure’ and said Sciver Brunt’s fitness would be assessed ahead of the T20Is against New Zealand.

Sciver-Brunt’s absence means that vice-captain Charlie Dean has been recalled to the ODI squad and will lead the side. This is despite the fact she was due to miss the series to recover from a back stress fracture. Top order batter Maia Bouchier has also been added to the squad as cover.

Sciver-Brunt’s Stats

Sciver-Brunt has been a mainstay in the England setup for many years. She was made captain after the thrashing in the 2024 Ashes series.

She has scored 4354 runs in ODIs at an average of 46.31 and a strike rate of 94.67. In T20Is, she has scored 2960 runs at 29.01 but an impressive strike rate of 119.11.

Sciver-Brunt also has 88 wickets in ODIs at 31.07, and 90 T20I wickets at 23.28.

England’s Upcoming Fixtures

England has three ODI’s against New Zealand, with games at Chester-Le-Street on 10th May, Northampton on 13th and Sophia Gardens on 16th.

They then play three T20I matches against New Zealand, at Derby (20th), Canterbury (23rd) and Hove (25th). Following that series, India are the opposition for three T20Is at Chelmsford (28th), Bristol (30th) and Taunton (2nd June).

Then the T20 World Cup starts, with England facing Sri Lanka first on 12th June at Edgbaston. They also play Ireland, Scotland, West Indies and New Zealand in their group matches.
