ODI Series Preview: Head Out, Marsh Injured as Australia Unleash New ODI Hope
  • Travis Head granted leave for entire Bangladesh tour
  • Mitchell Marsh ruled out of ODI series with ankle injury
  • Todd Murphy receives first Australia white ball call up

Australia’s six match white ball tour of Bangladesh gets underway on June 9 with a three match ODI series in Dhaka before the action moves to Chattogram for three T20 Internationals.

The tourists arrive as the world’s No. 3 ranked ODI side and will be eager to build momentum despite the absence of several senior stars. Australia will be without Travis Head for the entire tour while captain Mitchell Marsh is set to miss the ODI leg as he continues his recovery from an ankle injury.

The series begins at the Sher e Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka on June 9 and concludes with the third T20I at the Bir Sreshtho Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman Stadium in Chattogram on June 21.

Australia reshuffle plans ahead of Bangladesh challenge

Australia’s preparations have been disrupted by the loss of two key figures.

Head has been granted personal leave following a demanding schedule that included the IPL, while Marsh has not yet recovered sufficiently from the ankle issue that also forced him out of the recent Pakistan tour.

National selector Tony Dodemaide said:

“Travis was initially selected in the ODI and T20I legs of this Bangladesh tour but has subsequently been granted personal leave for both.

We look forward to seeing him again for the top end Test series against Bangladesh.”

Marsh is expected to join the squad in Dhaka and continue his rehabilitation with hopes of featuring in the T20I series beginning on June 17.

Dodemaide added:

“We were hopeful Mitch Marsh would be available for the Bangladesh ODI series however he is still returning to full fitness from an ankle injury.

Mitch will join the group in Dhaka and begin preparations for the T20I series.”

Josh Inglis set to continue in leadership role

With Marsh unavailable and regular ODI captain Pat Cummins rested, Josh Inglis will continue as Australia’s stand in captain after leading the side during the Pakistan series.

Should Marsh fail to recover in time for the T20Is, Inglis is also expected to take charge in that format.

The wicketkeeper batter has impressed with both bat and leadership responsibilities and now faces another important challenge in subcontinental conditions.

Head Out, Marsh Injured but Murphy gets his opportunity

The squad changes have also created an opening for Todd Murphy, who has earned his first white ball call up for Australia.

The off spinner replaces Tanveer Sangha, who suffered a hamstring injury during the Pakistan tour.

Murphy has already played seven Test matches for Australia and remains one of the country’s most highly regarded spin prospects. The Bangladesh conditions could provide the perfect stage for him to make an immediate impact.

Dodemaide said:

“We’re excited to welcome Todd Murphy into the ODI squad for the first time, while it made sense for Ollie Peake and Matt Short to stay with the group following the Pakistan tour.”

Teenage batter Ollie Peake and all rounder Matt Short have both retained their places after encouraging displays in Pakistan.

Australia remain favourites despite key absences

Australia enter the series ranked third in both the ICC ODI and T20I standings and will still be viewed as favourites.

However Bangladesh have become a formidable force at home and recently secured an ODI series victory over New Zealand. Led by Mehidy Hasan Miraz in the 50 over format, the hosts will be confident of challenging the visitors in familiar conditions.

The battle between Australia’s emerging talent and Bangladesh’s home advantage promises an intriguing contest across both formats.
