Archer Double Leaves New Zealand Lead In Range At Trent Bridge

Jofra Archer gave England a late route back into the Trent Bridge decider after New Zealand closed day three on 74-3, 148 runs ahead, in a Test still alive for both sides.

England were bowled out for 354 in reply to New Zealand’s 438, with Harry Brook’s 58 and lower-order resistance from Gus Atkinson and Archer limiting the first-innings damage. ReadCricket had already tracked how Brook’s fifty kept England in the contest, but the late shift came when Archer removed both openers under a wearing Nottingham sky.

Archer Gives England Overnight Pulse

The ESPNcricinfo scorecard placed New Zealand three down by the close, with Rachin Ravindra unbeaten and Daryl Mitchell alongside him. The Guardian’s live report also noted the broader pattern: variable bounce, seam movement and a pitch that is becoming harder to trust.

That matters because England do not need a miracle yet. They need an opening burst. Archer’s pace forced the match back into New Zealand’s decision-making, while Atkinson’s removal of Henry Nicholls ensured the tourists could not simply bank the 84-run first-innings lead and drift safely to stumps.

Day Four Now Hinges On First Hour

Ben Stokes’ side still trail the match situation, but New Zealand’s lead is not yet decisive. If Ravindra and Mitchell survive the first hour on Sunday, the target can quickly move beyond England’s comfort zone. If Archer and Atkinson strike early, Trent Bridge could still become a fourth-innings chase built for risk.

After three days of sharp swings, the decider has not settled. Archer has at least made sure England wake up with a live route back into it.
