Vaughan Sooryavanshi Call Deepens India Selection Heat

Michael Vaughan’s Vaibhav Sooryavanshi verdict has turned India’s Belfast selection call into a sharper talking point before Sunday’s second T20I against Ireland.

India left the 15-year-old batter out of the XI for the opening match at Stormont, where Ireland won by 34 runs after posting 182-9 and bowling India out for 148. The result gave the omission extra force because Sooryavanshi had been trailed as one of the most explosive options in India’s new-look squad.

Vaughan, reacting on X, said he could not believe India had not picked Sooryavanshi and called him the best T20 player in the world. The comment cuts through because it came before India’s chase unravelled, not after the result had made the argument easier.

Why India’s Explanation Now Carries More Pressure

Shreyas Iyer’s explanation was selection-balance based. He said Sooryavanshi would get his chance “when the time comes”, with India opting for three frontline seamers and an all-rounder instead.

That logic is defensible on an unfamiliar Belfast surface, but it becomes harder to sell after a batting failure. India’s immediate issue is no longer whether Sooryavanshi is ready for exposure; it is whether India can justify delaying a debut while searching for a sharper attacking identity.

ReadCricket had already flagged the wider Sooryavanshi record-watch angle before the series. Vaughan’s intervention now shifts the question from hype to selection consequence.

The second T20I therefore becomes a test of India’s appetite for correction. If Sooryavanshi remains outside the XI, the management will need more than patience as its public answer.
