Mehidy Return Gives Bangladesh Zimbabwe ODIs A Sharper Edge

Bangladesh’s ODI squad for Zimbabwe has moved from recovery mode into a more serious selection test, with Mehidy Hasan Miraz back to captain the side and Litton Das also listed after his recent calf issue.

ESPNcricinfo’s squad page for the second ODI in Harare lists Mehidy as captain, Litton as wicketkeeper-batter and Najmul Hossain Shanto among the top-order options, with the three-match series continuing on 9 July. The Daily Star also reported Litton’s inclusion for the ODI leg after he missed the one-off Test because of injury.

That changes the tone of the tour. Zimbabwe’s own seam-led threat has already been sharpened by Richard Ngarava’s ODI call-up, a selection ReadCricket covered in its Zimbabwe-Bangladesh series preview. Bangladesh now have their captain, a senior wicketkeeper-batter and a deeper pace group available at the same time.

Why Mehidy Matters

Mehidy’s return is not just an armband story. Bangladesh need his middle-overs control, lower-order batting and tactical steadiness after a bruising red-ball spell in Zimbabwe.

The squad balance gives them options: Mustafizur Rahman and Taskin Ahmed can attack with the new ball, Nahid Rana offers pace, while Rishad Hossain and Tanvir Islam keep spin in the argument.

Bangladesh’s Selection Pressure

The sharper question is whether Bangladesh can turn availability into authority. Litton’s fitness gives them class at the top, but it also raises the standard for a batting unit that cannot lean only on one senior name.

Against Zimbabwe, this is now less about patching holes and more about proving that Bangladesh’s ODI spine is intact before harder assignments arrive. The wider tour context also matters after Bangladesh’s all-format trip was confirmed earlier this year, as covered in ReadCricket’s Bangladesh-Zimbabwe fixture update.
