Axar Patel Claims Career-Best Figures As India Restrict England To 258

India’s bowlers dismissed England for 258 in the series-opening one-day international at Edgbaston, with spinner Axar Patel claiming career-best figures of 4 for 62 to lead the fightback.

According to a fresh match report from ESPNcricinfo, India’s seamers ripped through England’s top order before Axar Patel finished the job in the closing overs, delivering the standout spell of his ODI career. Captain Harry Brook’s side chose to bat first at Edgbaston but slipped to 80 for 5 inside the first 100 balls as India’s new-ball attack found early movement.

Joe Root And Liam Dawson Rescue England From Early Collapse

Joe Root and Liam Dawson came together with England reeling at 107 for 6 in the 22nd over and added 121 for the seventh wicket to drag the hosts to a competitive total. Root finished unbeaten on a run-a-ball 76 — his fourth consecutive score of fifty or more in the format — while Dawson reached his maiden ODI half-century on the way to 68.

Patel’s four-wicket haul, struck between the 41st and 50th overs, matched a feat previously managed by only Ravindra Jadeja among Indian spinners in ODI cricket, according to IANS. Prasidh Krishna and Gurnoor Brar chipped in with two wickets apiece as India shared the workload evenly across the bowling attack.

England were eventually bowled out for 258 in 47.5 overs, leaving India needing 259 to win the opener of a three-match series that continues at Sophia Gardens and Lord’s. The result caps a day that began with Josh Tongue’s maiden ODI cap for England, and follows on from build-up dominated by Jos Buttler’s 200th ODI appearance for the hosts.
