Former England captain Ben Stokes has signed a marquee BBL|16 contract with the Adelaide Strikers following his June 2026 retirement from international cricket.
The 35-year-old will be available for the entire upcoming tournament under head coach Tim Paine. His arrival aligns with broader domestic investment shifts, coming shortly after administrators approved a private franchise equity sale to boost long-term league growth.
Rebuilding Global Tournament Prestige
Australian opener Travis Head endorsed the signing as a critical step toward returning top international talent to the competition. He also offered the all-rounder a place to stay in Adelaide for the summer.
Speaking on Triple M’s The Rush Hour with JB & Billy, as reported by The West Australian, Head said: “Yeah, I’ve got a new housemate… big Stokesy! He’s going to play and kick up at mine for a few weeks, and I’ll make sure to look after him.”
Securing an elite talent for a full schedule represents a significant success for the Strikers. The commitment stands out as other national boards seek to limit franchise participation, with Bangladesh expected to deny international player clearance for their own fast bowlers.
Stokes confirmed his enthusiasm in a statement published by cricket.com.au. “I’m really excited to be joining the Adelaide Strikers for BBL|16,” he added.
The Adelaide outfit, who last secured the title during the 2017-18 season, begin their latest campaign this December.
