Brisbane Heat have signed English all-rounder Tom Curran on a one-year deal for the BBL|16 campaign to reinforce their fast-bowling stocks under new head coach James Hopes.
The franchise missed the top four last season after severe injury setbacks decimated their pace attack. Key bowlers Spencer Johnson and Callum Vidler sustained back stress fractures, forcing the club to field inexperienced replacement options.
Tactical Cover And Lower-Order Depth
Curran joins from Melbourne Stars after claiming 16 wickets in 10 appearances during his previous campaign. His arrival offers crucial flexibility as Brisbane anticipate potential international absences for Michael Neser and Xavier Bartlett. The 31-year-old also provides vital finishing abilities, offering crucial lower-order batting grit to salvage tight matches.
Hopes previously coached the seam bowler at Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League.
“We’re very pleased to sign a player with Tom’s skill level and experience,” Hopes said. “He’s fiercely competitive and from my experience coaching him at Delhi in the IPL, he lifts the other players around him through his energy, drive and focus.”
The coach noted the Englishman will directly cover specific all-round duties throughout the tournament.
“Batting wise, he is very similar to Mchael Neser in the way he can influence a game by managing the innings, either counterattacking himself or getting the best out of his partner.”
The Heat will finalise their remaining domestic contracts ahead of the tournament opener, with several pace vacancies still unresolved.
