Middlesex Lose Du Plooy For Season After Registration Error

Middlesex Leus Du Plooy during the Rothesay County Championship Two match between Lancashire County Cricket Club and Middlesex County Cricket Club at the Emirates, Old Trafford, Manchester, UK on 10 May 2026.

Middlesex captain Leus du Plooy has been ruled out for the remainder of the 2026 season after the club missed an ECB deadline to re-register him as an overseas player.

The 31-year-old invalidated his local player contract after recommitting to international cricket with his native South Africa.

Under ECB regulations, declaring an intention to represent another country automatically reclassifies domestic cricketers as overseas players.

Middlesex missed the registration cutoff on 6 September despite having a vacant overseas slot available.

ECB Registration Deadline Missed

The club released a formal statement addressing the administrative error.

“Middlesex Cricket can confirm that captain Leus du Plooy will be unable to play for the club for the remainder of the 2026 season following clarification of his playing registration status under ECB regulations,” the club stated.

The clerical error compounds broader off-field changes at Lord’s. Director of cricket Alan Coleman leaves at the end of the season, while Julie Harrington recently replaced Andrew Cornish as chief executive.

Du Plooy departs Middlesex having scored 2,795 first-class runs at an average of 51.75 since joining from Derbyshire in 2024.

Talks Continue Over Player Status

Middlesex remain in ongoing discussions with the ECB and the Professional Cricketers’ Association regarding the registration rules.

The cutoff coincided with a busy period of domestic squad adjustments, including spinner Nathan Sowter securing a Surrey contract for 2027.

Max Holden has assumed the captaincy for the current County Championship match against Durham.

Middlesex face Leicestershire in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup final at Trent Bridge on 20 September.
