Middlesex captain Leus du Plooy will leave the county at the end of the 2026 season after opting to recommit his international availability to South Africa.
County Status Forces Binary Decision
The 31-year-old left-hander’s decision invalidates his current contract at Lord’s, which was scheduled to run through the 2027 summer under local player status. English eligibility regulations mandate that pursuing a Proteas call-up immediately reclassifies him as an overseas asset.
Du Plooy assumed the Middlesex captaincy in June 2025 and departs having scored 2,795 first-class runs for the club at an average of 51.75. His exit creates a structural leadership void and removes a dependable top-order presence who struck an unbeaten 263 against Gloucestershire last year.
South Africa Target Middle Order
The batter trades long-term domestic stability for a chance to break into an evolving national setup. South Africa are actively assessing their depth ahead of a home white-ball campaign, with Temba Bavuma returning as captain against Australia.
The national selection panel also recently tested their broader player pool during a victorious T20I Tri-Series in Namibia.
“An opportunity has arisen for me to explore the possibility of representing South Africa, and I feel that I owe it to myself to see where that opportunity might lead,” Du Plooy said.
Middlesex director of cricket Alan Coleman confirmed the club supports his international aspirations but acknowledged the loss of a key performer. The current County Championship season concludes on 27 September.
