Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has formally acquired an equity stake in the Australia Champions franchise ahead of the third World Championship of Legends season, appointing David Warner as team captain. The announcement, made at Melbourne’s Eureka 89 on Tuesday, establishes a precedent for retired international players taking equity positions in franchise properties rather than solely accepting broadcast or coaching contracts. Ponting joins co-owner Puneet Singh in controlling the team before the tournament runs from October 3 to October 18.
Shift Towards Private Investment
This structural development in legends cricket intersects with broader commercial changes across the domestic sport. Cricket Australia recently permitted private ownership within the Big Bash, while the players’ union continues to demand a renegotiated revenue-sharing agreement before any domestic franchise sales conclude. Warner joins the WCL squad as the latest marquee addition for the upcoming campaign. The former opening batter will guide a roster incorporating several former international teammates in the franchise tournament.
Warner Assumes Leadership Duties
“I’m excited to be part of Australia Champions and the World Championship of Legends. With Puneet and the team, and David leading from the front, we have a great opportunity to build something special for Australian cricket fans,” Ponting told CricTracker. The third World Championship of Legends season begins with the opening fixture in Melbourne on October 3, concluding with the final on October 18.
