Hobart Hurricanes confirm Adam Zampa signing for BBL|16

Australia leg-spinner Adam Zampa has signed a two-year contract with the Hobart Hurricanes ahead of BBL|16, becoming only the fourth cricketer to feature for five separate Big Bash clubs.

The transfer was enabled by updated league contracting rules. Clubs are no longer forced to allocate $300,000 for top-tier overseas players. This shift freed crucial salary cap space for Hobart, reflecting broader financial restructuring alongside recent Big Bash equity sales.

National Teammates Influence Move

The 34-year-old moves from the Melbourne Renegades after previous spells with the Thunder, Strikers, and Stars. He joins Australian internationals Tim David, Riley Meredith, and Nathan Ellis in Tasmania.

Speaking to cricket.com.au, Zampa outlined his motivation. “There were conversations that had happened with other teams, and basically once it came to crunch time with the embargo, (I had) conversations with Nathan Ellis.”

Zampa noted the presence of familiar faces at the franchise. “They’re a really good list with good people… it’s going to feel like I’m going into the Australian team basically.”

Balancing Domestic Roster Priorities

Franchises are increasingly balancing their spending between proven domestic internationals and foreign imports. While high-profile foreign arrivals continue, such as when Ben Stokes joined Adelaide, securing local depth remains vital.

Zampa takes 138 career Big Bash wickets to his new club. The leg-spinner will make his Hobart debut when the BBL|16 season begins.
