WA Cricket Delays Perth Scorchers Privatisation Call

WA Cricket chief executive John Stephenson confirmed at Thursday’s season launch that no timeline has been set for any potential Perth Scorchers equity sale.

The reigning Big Bash League champions are moving cautiously following Cricket Australia’s approval of a “self-determination” franchise model on Tuesday. This approach contrasts sharply with Cricket Victoria’s immediate caretaker handover of the Melbourne Renegades ahead of a targeted 2027-28 transition.

Protecting Strong Brand Identity

The Perth side holds a dominant market position and regularly fills Optus Stadium. Reports suggest strong interest from local business figures like Andrew Forrest, alongside the IPL-aligned Sun TV Network.

This market leverage allows Western Australia to pause and consider retaining a 51 per cent stake, protecting their control against risks to grassroots funding.

Speaking to The West Australian, Stephenson outlined the association’s measured stance.

“Self-determination means you can opt in or opt out, but going to the next stage … isn’t about necessarily inviting minority ownership of the Scorchers, it’s about potentially testing the market and doing our due diligence and gathering all the information before potentially we go to the next stage.”

Franchise valuations will also be dictated by revenue guarantee demands from the players’ union and international scheduling overlaps. The upcoming domestic season begins in Chennai on 12 December.
