Former India international Sharma secured a maiden Ranji Trophy title for Jammu and Kashmir following a massive first-innings lead over Karnataka in the 2025-26 final.
The 61-year-old orchestrated the historic triumph after fundamentally overhauling the squad’s dynamics. Appointed in September 2022, his early tenure was marked by severe friction. Squad members initially viewed his strict methods as those of a “dictator” according to Kashmir Life.
Dismantling Squad Star Culture
Adapting his leadership style, the head coach dismantled the existing “star culture,” dropping established names to enforce accountability and fitness standards. This structural shift transformed the underdog side into a cohesive unit capable of defeating eight-time champions Karnataka.
His coaching success marks a remarkable professional redemption. The domestic batting giant accumulated 10,120 first-class runs at an average of 67.46, including 38 centuries, before a match-fixing scandal abruptly ended his playing involvement in December 2000.
Overturning A Lifetime Ban
The Board of Control for Cricket in India originally handed down lifetime suspensions. Former board president A.C. Muthiah told The Irish Times: “We have examined the report of Madhavan and we came to the conclusion that the players’ denial was unacceptable. We agreed that we will accept the decision taken by Madhavan,”
A Delhi court subsequently cleared him of all charges in 2014, eventually paving the way for his return to the professional dugout.
While the national squad finalises a potential top-order rethink and undergoes a high-intensity net session ahead of their Afghanistan series, the domestic champions will now prepare to defend their maiden red-ball crown.
