Fifteen-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi endured a rigorous net session against a returning Jasprit Bumrah at the Arun Jaitley Stadium ahead of India’s T20I series against Afghanistan.
The intensive training environment provided the teenage left-hander with essential exposure to elite international standards. While Sooryavanshi had confidently dispatched Bumrah over mid-on during the Indian Premier League, Friday evening presented a markedly different challenge.
Bumrah, recovering from a knee injury sustained against England in July, delivered an aggressive bowling workload under the floodlights.
Bridging The International Gap
Operating with a short run-up, the 32-year-old fast bowler repeatedly tested the teenager with sharp pace and precise yorkers. Bumrah beat Sooryavanshi with a seaming good-length delivery before finding his outside edge from back of a length.
The 15-year-old maintained his composure, eventually responding with a crisp cover drive and a well-timed back-foot punch.
High Intensity Technical Development
The demanding examination extended beyond Bumrah’s 45-minute spell. Arshdeep Singh troubled the young batter with late movement, while Yash Thakur also generated significant pressure, despite Sooryavanshi having attacked him in the Duleep Trophy.
This high-calibre preparation accelerates the teenager’s technical development following an Ishan Kishan injury scare that could influence selection for Sunday’s opening fixture.
India open their three-match series against Afghanistan in New Delhi on 13 September, pending final squad evaluations.
