Marcus Trescothick Assesses Jacob Bethell Opener Prospects For South Africa Tour

England interim coach Marcus Trescothick admits the Test side could abandon traditional specialist openers when Stephen Fleming assumes control for December’s tour of South Africa.

Joe Root’s side must integrate returning middle-order prospect Jacob Bethell following a knee injury, raising questions over Emilio Gay’s position. Gay registered three half-centuries this summer but averages below 25.

With Dan Lawrence offering off-spin and Jordan Cox solidifying his credentials following a strong Test introduction, the top-order reshuffle remains complex. This tactical agility mirrors the broader international game, where an Afghanistan franchise blueprint is routinely deployed to target specific oppositions.

Speaking to BBC Sport, the 50-year-old suggested modern versatility makes classical top-order specialists less essential.

“I reckon times have changed a little bit,” Trescothick said.

Adapting To Modern Demands

Trescothick acknowledged the decision now rests with Fleming, who arrives in the UK shortly to hold planning discussions alongside Root.

“I think you look at your best batting line-up, however that fits up,” Trescothick added.

Cox impressed as Bethell’s replacement at number three, averaging over 42 during the ongoing Pakistan series. Bethell himself has already moved up the order in England’s one-day setup, making him a prime candidate to face the new ball on bouncy South African pitches.

England begin their South African assignment with the first Test in Johannesburg on 17 December.
