Sikandar Raza will captain Zimbabwe for their three-match ODI series against Australia after a lower-back injury ruled regular leader Richard Ngarava out of the impending Harare fixtures.
Pace Attack Depleted For Series
Ngarava missed the recent T20I tri-series in Namibia with the same complaint and could remain unavailable for October’s tour of the United Arab Emirates. Tanaka Chivanga is also absent with an Achilles issue, leaving Raza to manage a severely depleted seam attack for Australia’s first visit in 12 years.
Pace bowling stocks across the region face immediate stress, echoing the fast-bowling depth crisis challenging neighbouring South Africa. The visiting Australian side similarly arrive managing an evolving calendar as players including Matt Renshaw transition formats.
Veterans Return To Bolster Squad
Blessing Muzarabani will lead the remaining fast bowlers alongside Brad Evans and Newman Nyamhuri. Leg-spinner Graeme Cremer returns to play his first ODIs since 2018, while veteran Brendan Taylor is recalled to strengthen the middle order.
Zimbabwe Cricket chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani outlined the board’s leadership expectations when establishing this squad hierarchy. Speaking to The Times of India, Mukuhlani said: “Captaincy is about far more than leading a team onto the field. It demands integrity, resilience, sound judgment, and the ability to inspire those around you.”
Zimbabwe will use the fixtures to prepare for the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, which they will co-host alongside South Africa and Namibia.
The first ODI takes place at Harare Sports Club on September 15.
