England white-ball head coach Brendon McCullum has handed Derbyshire batter Aneurin Donald his T20 international debut to open alongside Jos Buttler against Sri Lanka at Southampton.
The 29-year-old replaces Phil Salt, who is sidelined with a minor quadriceps injury, as the hosts maintain a commitment to powerplay aggression. Jacob Bethell misses out with a knee problem, while a groin issue sidelines Sam Curran. Fast bowler Jofra Archer is rested following the Test series.
Rare Derbyshire International Milestone
Donald secured his promotion following an outstanding Vitality Blast campaign, scoring 489 runs at a strike rate of 214 and hitting a tournament-high 37 sixes. The call-up represents a rare senior recognition for a Derbyshire player, capping a domestic career path that took the Welshman from Glamorgan to Hampshire before joining the East Midlands county in 2023.
His transition to the senior setup follows a recent Lions white-ball victory where he demonstrated his top-order capabilities. The aggressive selection approach aims to immediately pressure the touring Sri Lanka squad.
McCullum Backs Top Order Changes
Speaking to Sky Sports, McCullum confirmed the starting partnership.
“Anerurin will open the batting with Jos, which is very exciting. He is a cricketer that has been on our radar for quite some time,” McCullum said.
“I am looking forward to seeing how he goes on the big stage. I am sure him and Jos will be a good combination.”
The three-match series begins at the Utilita Bowl on Tuesday evening.
