Melbourne Stars confirm Cameron White appointment alongside overseas roster overhaul

Melbourne Stars have appointed Cameron White as head coach for the BBL|16 season alongside a complete overhaul of their three international roster slots.

The former Melbourne Renegades coach replaces Peter Moores, who transitions into a director of coaching role despite holding a year remaining on his contract. Despite pivoting the franchise’s international strategy, White stressed “stability” across the wider domestic squad when speaking to cricket.com.au.

Overseas Roster Strategy Shift

The Stars will field New Zealand batter Finn Allen alongside English all-rounders Craig and Jamie Overton as their three allotted overseas players. Securing the Overton twins’ BBL|16 deals addresses lower-order batting depth and seam options.

The recruitment mirrors county cricket’s white-ball surge by deploying dynamic domestic talent over specialist international pace. This marks a structural departure, meaning last season’s leading wicket-taker Haris Rauf and opening batter Joe Clarke leave the franchise.

White confirmed Marcus Stoinis retains the captaincy as the Stars pursue their first Big Bash title.

Wider Privatisation Investment Debate

White arrives as Cricket Victoria navigates the proposed 100 per cent sale of the Renegades, with Cricket Australia inviting private bids ahead of 2027.

The wider privatisation scheme continues to divide state associations. White endorsed the structural changes, advocating for increased external funding across the sport.

White said: “I think it’ll get there. Some people are obviously for it at the moment and some are against, but I think everyone will be on board eventually.”

The Melbourne Stars will finalise their domestic rookie contracts ahead of the BBL|16 campaign starting in December.
