England Modify 2027 County Schedule For Ashes Preparation

The England and Wales Cricket Board has drafted a 2027 domestic calendar that restores June and July County Championship fixtures to improve red-ball preparation ahead of the home Ashes series.

Australia won the 2025-26 Ashes 4-1, prompting a January internal review that identified inadequate match practice for England’s Test squad. During that tour, players managed just one intra-squad run-out at Lilac Hill and a two-day floodlit match in Canberra outside the five Tests.

Earliest Start Date Proposed

Under the initial draft, the season will begin on 2 April, marking the earliest start in the competition’s history. The proposed schedule features seven initial rounds separated by three-day intervals. This restructuring removes two August rounds and repositions them in July, ensuring Test players have access to four-day cricket before and during the series.

The shift appeases county traditionalists who have grown frustrated by the mid-summer dominance of The Hundred. Managing squad workloads across these early-season fixtures will present a logistical challenge for Test captain Joe Root and head coach Stephen Fleming. Similar workload challenges are currently testing global squads, with a stripped-back Australia in Harare and Victoria’s next wave facing immediate hurdles ahead of their respective campaigns.

The men’s Ashes series begins at Trent Bridge on 18 June 2027, preceded by the World Test Championship final at The Oval from 9 June.
