Jonny Bairstow has signed with Melbourne Renegades for the upcoming Big Bash League season. The England wicketkeeper fills the overseas spot left vacant by Tim Seifert’s move to the Sydney Sixers. Confirmation of the Jonny Bairstow Melbourne Renegades deal arrived this week, with any reported financial terms yet to be verified by official sources.
Bairstow will now call the MCG his home ground and says he is looking forward to playing there regularly. He last represented England in the 2024 T20 World Cup semi-final defeat to India. He was dropped from the Test side after the tour of India that ended with his 100th cap in Dharamsala.
Fox Sports interview details Bairstow’s move to the MCG
In an interview with Fox Sports Australia, Bairstow addressed the Ashes incident that made him a villain in Australian eyes. Alex Carey ran him out at Lord’s in 2023 after he wandered from his crease between deliveries, in a moment that still divides opinion on both sides.
Bairstow waved the controversy away. “But that was (three) years ago now, there’s a lot of water that’s passed under the bridge,” he said. He expects a cheerful reception when Renegades fans and rival supporters see him on an Australian ground this summer. “The reception will probably be quite fun at times. It’s not something that being an Englishman you’re averse to when you’re over in Oz. So yeah, it’ll be great fun,” he said.
He is also excited about his new home venue. “To call the MCG my home ground is great,” Bairstow said, rating it among the sport’s elite arenas: “Of sporting stadiums around the world that you want to play in, that’s definitely in the top few.”
Squad changes and tactical fit for Melbourne Renegades
The move follows Seifert’s departure for the Sydney Sixers, which left Renegades short of an experienced gloveman and top-order batter. Bairstow’s arrival restores that balance and gives the club a wicketkeeper with decades of international white-ball experience.
The Yorkshire connection made the deal possible. Renegades high performance manager Clint McKay, who played alongside Bairstow at Yorkshire in 2010, reached out to him through current Yorkshire bowling coach Mick Lewis, who has strong ties to Melbourne cricket.
The Jonny Bairstow Melbourne Renegades signing is one of several notable overseas moves in this Big Bash League season. Ben Stokes has joined the Adelaide Strikers and Zak Crawley has signed for the Perth Scorchers, meaning three current England internationals will feature across the competition.
Upcoming Big Bash League timeline and England international context
Bairstow has not played for England in any format since the semi-final defeat to India at the 2024 T20 World Cup. His last Test appearance came in Dharamsala, his 100th cap, before he was dropped from the side following that tour of India.
His focus now turns fully to the Big Bash, where he joins Renegades for the first time this Australian summer. The move comes as England continue shaping plans for the next Ashes series. our earlier report covers the Test coach’s vision for that series, and other coverage outlines adjustments to the county calendar designed to prepare players for Australia.
