  • MS Dhoni may return for CSK’s final home game against Sunrisers Hyderabad at Chepauk.
  • Speculation is growing that this could be Dhoni’s final appearance in front of Chennai fans in the IPL.
  • CSK are still alive in the playoff race.

In the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) season, Chennai Super Kings is set to play their last home game against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).

However, this is the most crucial game of the season for Ruturaj Gaikwad and his team, as a defeat will most likely eliminate them from playoff contention. Nevertheless, the result itself may not be the big story going into the game.

Almost all of the attention is on Mahendra Singh Dhoni and if he will play against Sunrisers Hyderabad in CSK’s final home game of the season.

There has been speculation about Dhoni’s final T20 match because of the promise he has repeatedly made over the past few years: that he will play it in Chennai in front of the passionate fans at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. As a result, the mood around the fixture has completely changed.

Chepauk awaits possible final appearance of MS Dhoni

Dhoni has played hide-and-seek with the fans during a season hampered by strains and injuries. He mostly avoided the spotlight after suffering a calf injury at the beginning of the IPL 2026.

Reports from the CSK camp surfaced many times this season, indicating that the former captain was in excellent physical condition but was opting to remain away to give younger players, who would eventually become the team’s core.

Players like Ramakrishna Ghosh, Urvil Patel, and Kartik Sharma have stepped up for the team this season. With players like Ayush Mhatre, Dewald Brevis, and Noor Ahmad, CSK seems to be assembling a youthful core that might sustain the team’s competitiveness in the foreseeable future.

Dhoni worked hard in the nets on Sunday, a day before the match against Hyderabad, reigniting fans’ hopes of seeing him play at Chepauk in what could be the final home appearance of his illustrious IPL career. It goes without saying that Chepauk will go completely crazy if Dhoni plays.

Emotional night awaits for CSK fans

CSK’s upcoming clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad will carry extra emotional weight as it is the team’s final home match at the venue where Dhoni has carved out an iconic legacy over nearly two decades. A wave of excitement was created among fans when it was announced that he might be returning to Chepauk.

CSK’s season has been inconsistent, and playoff qualification is still uncertain. The management may be considering Dhoni’s leadership and experience as a possible reason to bring him back. In the meantime, CSK has remained silent on Dhoni’s selection.

Despite starting the season with three straight losses, the Super Kings are still in the running to finish in the top four. With 12 points and a net run rate of +0.207, they are presently sixth in the standings after winning six of their previous 12 games.
