ECB moves India T20I start times as ‘high-value broadcast series’ boosts viewership
  • ECB brings forward start times for three India T20Is
  • Broadcasters target larger UK and Indian TV audiences
  • India’s tour continues to drive strong ticket demand

The England and Wales Cricket Board has revised the start times for three of England’s upcoming T20 internationals against India this summer in a move designed to maximise television audiences in two of cricket’s biggest markets.

The matches, which form part of India’s white-ball tour of England between July 1 and July 19, will now begin at 5.30pm local time rather than the previously scheduled 6.30pm. The revised timings mean viewers in India will be able to tune in from 10pm IST instead of 11pm.

The five-match T20I series sits at the heart of an eight-game limited-overs tour that also includes three One Day Internationals.

Broadcasters play key role in schedule change

The ECB typically finalises match schedules for England internationals in consultation with venues, visiting boards and television partners. In this case, broadcasters in both the United Kingdom and India played a significant role in shaping the final timings.

The adjustment follows discussions involving the ECB, Sky Sports and Sony Sports Network, with the aim of attracting the largest possible audience for one of the summer’s most anticipated cricket series.

ECB moves India T20I schedule amid growing commercial value

The decision also highlights the enormous commercial appeal of matches involving India, which continue to generate some of the strongest viewing figures in world cricket.

The ECB’s latest financial report underlined the importance of major overseas tours to its revenue projections.

“Attention should be drawn to the fact that the ECB’s revenues are inherently cyclical, reflecting the scheduling of high-value broadcast series by opposition,” the report stated.

India’s tour is expected to play a major role in helping English cricket return a profit this year, illustrating the continued value of marquee international fixtures.

Ticket demand remains exceptionally strong

Supporters have responded enthusiastically to the upcoming tour, with all three ODI fixtures already sold out.

Only a limited number of tickets remain available across the five-match T20I series, further demonstrating the enduring attraction of England versus India contests.

With daylight extending beyond 9pm during the English summer, there is also a strong possibility that several matches could conclude before floodlights become a significant factor.

Sooryavanshi set to add excitement before England series

India have already generated considerable interest with the announcement of their T20I squad.

New captain Shreyas Iyer will lead the side after replacing Suryakumar Yadav, while highly rated youngster Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has received his first senior call-up.

The 15-year-old prodigy could make his international debut during India’s two-match T20I series against Ireland in Belfast on June 26 and June 28 before attention turns to England.

Interest in those matches has increased sharply since the squad announcement, although both fixtures had already sold out. The Civil Service Ground at Stormont is expected to welcome capacity crowds of around 4,500 as fans hope to witness the emergence of one of cricket’s most exciting young talents.
