Round 5 of the Rothesay County Championship is already taking shape after a dramatic opening day. Two matches were dominated by bat and others finely poised after momentum swings.
As Day 2 begins, there’s a mix of recovery jobs, consolidation innings and opportunities to push for early control. All the action is available to watch live. Full scorecards can also be found here.
Surrey v Sussex – The Kia Oval
Sussex produced a stunning turnaround after slipping to 92/7, recovering through a record ninth-wicket stand between Ollie Robinson and Jack Carson. Both tail-enders made centuries to power a declaration at 358/9.
Surrey closed safely on 19/0, but the momentum is firmly with Sussex after turning a collapse into a commanding total. Day 2 will test Surrey’s top order against a buoyant attack.
Hampshire v Glamorgan – The Rose Bowl
Glamorgan dominated throughout, reaching 353/1 after being put in. Zain ul Hassan’s composed maiden century and Kiran Carlson’s fluent 158 came in a huge partnership that left Hampshire chasing the game early.
With little assistance from the pitch, Hampshire face a long second day unless they can make early breakthroughs. Meanwhile, Glamorgan are perfectly placed to build a match-defining total.
Somerset v Yorkshire – Taunton
Somerset edged in front after a day of shifting momentum. Lewis Gregory’s six wickets triggered a Yorkshire collapse to 162, before Somerset recovered from 35/3 thanks to Josh Thomas’ unbeaten century.
At 201/3 and leading by 39, Somerset now have the platform to press their advantage, while Yorkshire need early wickets to stay in the contest.
Leicestershire v Nottinghamshire – Grace Road
Nottinghamshire took full control on Day 1, posting 405/4 with Ben Slater’s 178 leading the charge, supported by Ben Duckett and Joe Clarke.
Leicestershire struggled to maintain pressure despite favourable conditions and now face a tough task on Day 2, with Nottinghamshire well placed to push towards a commanding first-innings total.
Day 2 sets up key turning points across all four matches, with momentum, resilience and early sessions likely to shape the direction of each contest.
