Middlesex chair Richard Sykes to step down triggering complete leadership reset

Middlesex chair Richard Sykes has announced his intention to step down, completing a sweeping executive clearance that hands interim chief executive Julie Harrington total authority over institutional reform.

Sykes’ impending exit follows the June dismissal of former chief executive Andrew Cornish and the confirmed end-of-season departure of cricket director Alan Coleman. Harrington assumed her temporary position in July and immediately commissioned two independent governance reviews to assess the county’s administration.

Former Players Force Executive Changes

A collective of former players led by Mike Gatting campaigned for leadership changes ahead of the domestic season. In an open letter highlighted by West London Sport, the group stated the county had been “poorly led for too long” and allowed to “sink to its current level,”. Additional extracts published by the Guardian showed the veterans described the administration as “structurally a mess, is devoid of accountability and lacks proper checks and balances”.

Navigating Structural And Financial Issues

The leadership vacuum provides Harrington a blank slate to address long-standing financial limitations tied to the Lord’s tenancy agreement. Clubs across the sport are evaluating complex structural adjustments, echoing what Rishabh Pant’s exit reveals about shifting franchise dynamics. Middlesex previously received a suspended points deduction and a £50,000 fine in September 2023 for breaching financial regulations.

A nominations committee will form shortly to begin the search for a permanent chair. Middlesex face Leicestershire in the One-Day Cup final at Trent Bridge on Sunday.
