Former India opener Mayank Agarwal scored 177 to justify Durham’s late-season overseas recruitment strategy on the opening day against Worcestershire at Chester-le-Street.
The 35-year-old and former England captain Ben Stokes shared a rapid 105-run fourth-wicket partnership from just 93 deliveries. Stokes contributed a 40-ball half-century before his dismissal, while Agarwal maintained the aggressive tempo to reach his maiden county hundred off 121 balls.
Strategic Overseas Roster Management
While rival batting units face disruption that requires their top scorers to step up, Durham moved decisively on 31 August to secure Agarwal. The right-hander replaces David Bedingham, who returned to South Africa ahead of their red-ball commitments.
Displaying the same hunger for a national return that keeps selectors monitoring a veteran’s IPL form, Agarwal ultimately anchored the hosts to 437 for seven.
Head coach Ryan Campbell outlined the necessity of the signing to Durham Cricket.
He said: “With David Bedingham returning to South Africa ahead of their international red ball summer it was important we acted by recruiting a high-class international cricketer for the remainder of the season.”
Campbell added: “We are delighted to have Mayank joining us for our County Championship run in.”
Agarwal eventually fell caught behind to Tom Taylor, having hit 31 boundaries and one six during his 220-ball stay. Durham resume their first innings on Wednesday morning.
