Somerset Target Bonus Points In Pursuit Of Maiden Title

Somerset enter the final two rounds of the County Championship trailing Division One leaders Nottinghamshire by four points as they pursue a maiden title.

Targeting First Innings Points

With 48 maximum points available across their concluding matches against Yorkshire and Surrey, Somerset must capitalise on early scoring. Teams can secure up to eight bonus points for batting and bowling returns during the opening 110 overs of their first innings.

This structural mechanic means outright match victories alone might not be sufficient to leapfrog the defending champions, making every early run and wicket critical.

Senior squad members Craig Overton, Tom Abell and Jack Leach must guide the team through four-day tests against the two most historically successful Championship sides.

Overton acknowledged the challenge ahead of their trip to Yorkshire. “There’s still a long way to go in this Championship and so much cricket to be played,” he told BBC Sport.

He added: “We’ve just got to keep doing our thing, keep doing the basics and see where we are at the end of this game.”

Nottinghamshire will visit Sussex before hosting Yorkshire as they attempt to retain their crown. Meanwhile, third-placed Warwickshire sit just five points adrift following a ten-match unbeaten streak as they travel to Essex.
