England seamer Sonny Baker has committed his future to Hampshire after signing a new two-year extension that will keep him at the club through to the end of the 2028 campaign.

The 23-year-old pace bowler has continued his impressive rise since arriving from Somerset in 2025 and has quickly become one of Hampshire’s most dependable attacking options across formats.

Baker has collected 47 wickets in 22 appearances for the south coast side with 36 of those coming in first-class cricket. His influence has already been evident this season after claiming 14 wickets in Hampshire’s opening five County Championship fixtures.

Having featured in four of those matches Baker has underlined both his growing consistency and his value within the squad as Hampshire continue their push for red-ball success.

Baker Reflects on Hampshire Progress

Speaking after agreeing the new deal Baker said his main focus this season has been on earning the trust of senior figures within the squad through improved performances and consistency.

“My main aims for this year were to earn the respect of the senior players by demonstrating more consistency in performance.

“I feel I’ve come a long way since last year all thanks to the experiences I’ve had here.”

England Fast Bowler Chasing Test Recognition

Baker’s progress has also been recognised at international level. The fast bowler has already made two appearances for England including an ODI defeat against South Africa before helping his side secure a T20 victory over Ireland just weeks later.

The Hampshire quick is now widely viewed as a contender for a maiden Test call-up later this summer as competition for places in England’s pace attack intensifies.

Hampshire Praise Sonny Baker’s Development

Hampshire director of cricket Giles White praised Baker’s development since arriving at the club and believes the seamer has become a central figure within the squad.

White said:

“Sonny has established himself as a key member of the team and it has been great to witness his development over the course of his time with us.

“He brings a fantastic outlook on life and has made the most of every opportunity adding skill to complement his natural pace.

“He is fully committed has an exceptional attitude and we are delighted to have him as part of the setup.”

For Hampshire securing Baker’s long-term future represents another important step as the club continues building around an emerging group of young talent capable of competing across all formats.
