Sunil Gavaskar has revealed how a suggestion from former Australia captain Adam Gilchrist helped shape the Indian Premier League’s modern playoff format during the tournament’s early years.

The Indian batting legend shared the story while reflecting on the IPL’s growth from a bold cricketing experiment into one of the biggest sporting leagues in the world.

Gilchrist’s Idea Changed the IPL Playoffs

Gavaskar revealed that during his stint on the IPL Governing Council in 2010 he personally wrote to captains of all eight franchises asking for ideas to improve the competition.

While most responses offered only minor suggestions Gavaskar said one proposal stood out from the rest.

Adam Gilchrist, who represented Kings XI Punjab during the early IPL seasons, recommended giving the teams finishing first and second in the league table an extra opportunity to reach the final through the Qualifier and Eliminator system.

That structure remains in place today and is viewed as one of the defining features of the IPL playoffs.

Gavaskar Says He Was Questioned Over the Move

The former India captain admitted his initiative did not receive unanimous support within the Governing Council.

Another Governing Council member confronted Gavaskar and questioned why he had contacted franchise captains without official approval.

“I had written in my personal capacity as a former captain and player with the sole intention of seeing how we could make the IPL even better,” Gavaskar wrote in his Mid Day column.

He added that the Governing Council eventually accepted Gilchrist’s recommendation and the format has since become a crucial strategic target for every IPL side.

IPL Teams Still Chase Top Two Finish

Under the current format the top two teams receive two chances to qualify for the IPL final which significantly increases their chances of lifting the trophy.

Gavaskar noted that franchises now place enormous value on securing a top two finish because of the advantage created by the playoff system.

The format has also added greater drama and tactical importance to the final stages of the league campaign.

Gavaskar Reflects on IPL’s Growth

Gavaskar described his involvement with the IPL’s inaugural Governing Council as one of the proudest experiences of his cricketing life.

The former opener said those involved in the league’s foundation years view the IPL “like our baby” and take pride in watching its remarkable rise over the past decade and a half.

From packed stadiums to global television audiences the IPL has evolved into one of cricket’s most influential competitions and Gavaskar believes innovations like Gilchrist’s playoff proposal played a major role in shaping its success.
