England rising star Rehan Ahmed is heading to the Indian Premier League after sealing a move to Delhi Capitals for the remainder of the 2026 campaign.

The 21-year-old leg-spinning all-rounder will travel to India with immediate effect. It will be his first step into the world’s most high-profile T20 competition. His deal, reportedly worth £60,000, is set to keep him with Delhi through to at least the end of the group stage on 24 May.

Rehan Ahmed Set for IPL Breakthrough with Delhi Capitals

Ahmed joins a Delhi side positioned fifth in the table with a balanced 3–3 record from their opening six matches, still firmly in contention for a place in the knockout phase.

The England international arrives with growing stature. Across five Tests, nine ODIs and 13 T20Is, he has claimed 49 wickets, underlining his versatility across formats and his value as a dual-threat cricketer.

His departure means a temporary absence from Leicestershire County Cricket Club duties. Ahmed will miss the club’s next four County Championship fixtures, as well as at least their opening two group-stage matches in the T20 Blast.

Leicestershire Pride as Academy Pathway Delivers

Speaking to club media, Leicestershire director of cricket Claude Henderson made clear the pride felt within the camp:

“We’re absolutely delighted for Rehan and incredibly proud as a club to see him earn this opportunity,” Henderson said via Leicestershire CCC.

“It’s a real testament to the hard work of everyone within our academy and pathway system, and exactly what we strive for.

“We’re excited to watch him go and express himself, and we’ll be right behind him every step of the way before welcoming him back to Leicester.”

Ahmed has made a steady start to the red-ball season. The all-rounder has taken six wickets and scored 56 runs across Leicestershire’s opening two County Championship matches. His contributions have been vital, as the side adjusts to life back in Division One.

For a player already comfortable on the international stage, this move offers another significant platform. The IPL spotlight now awaits. Ahmed has been given the chance to test his skills against some of the best white-ball players in the game.
