Heather Knight confirms Sydney Thunder WBBL|12 return

Former England captain Heather Knight has signed a one-year deal with Sydney Thunder for the upcoming WBBL|12 campaign following her international retirement in July.

The 35-year-old will represent the franchise for a fifth season while reshaping the traditional path for retired international players. Having recently transitioned into executive administration as general manager for the London Spirit women’s team, Knight offers a rare front-office perspective alongside her playing commitments.

Executive Insight In Sydney

Her return provides tactical support for Thunder captain Phoebe Litchfield. Knight joins compatriot Sophie Ecclestone, who recently secured a Strikers extension, in committing to the Australian tournament. This franchise focus follows her exit from an England setup where the demands of the international game continue, highlighted recently when extreme pace exposed Joe Root against Pakistan.

Speaking to cricket.com.au, Knight outlined how her administrative work reshapes her playing approach.

“However, seeing how a franchise works from another view has been very cool. It’s made me appreciate what a lot of the league and coaches and support staff do,” Knight said.

Thunder general manager Trent Copeland confirmed the strategic advantage of signing an active player with executive experience.

“She’s also a real enabler for players like Phoebe Litchfield, Georgia Voll and Laura Harris, being able to provide an expertise that other teams don’t have access to,” Copeland added.

Sydney Thunder have now confirmed nine of their 15 roster spots ahead of the WBBL|12 season.
