Former Australia Test opener Usman Khawaja has re-signed with the Brisbane Heat for the upcoming Big Bash League season following his retirement from international and first-class cricket.
The 39-year-old is available for a complete domestic campaign after concluding his 15-year international career. Khawaja waited until the league-wide contracting embargo lifted last month to secure his new deal.
Maximising Impact As Designated Batter
Competition organisers are introducing a designated batter rule this summer. Teams can nominate one player to bat without any fielding or bowling obligations.
Brisbane head coach James Hopes is yet to confirm his captain for the season. Khawaja is viewed as a prime candidate for the specialist batting role to manage his workload.
Speaking to cricket.com.au, Khawaja outlined his anticipation for the domestic schedule.
“It’s going to be a bit strange, but very exciting as well, to be at the Gabba for the first game of our season on 15 December,” Khawaja said.
He added: “In the past it has been a few games here or there, depending on the Australian team’s commitments, which has been enjoyable. But the prospect of a full competition is even better.”
Brisbane Heat Finalise BBL Roster
The franchise has filled 14 of their 18 primary roster allocations. Fast bowler Michael Neser has extended his contract until the end of BBL|17.
Brisbane have also secured New Zealand batter Tim Robinson and England seamer Tom Curran. Australian Test batter Marnus Labuschagne remains uncontracted.
